Sherman is a small town located in Chautauqua County, New York, in the United States. It is found in the middle of the county, to the west of Chautauqua Lake. In 2020, about 1,618 people lived in Sherman. The town is also home to the village of Sherman.

History of Sherman

The area where Sherman is now located was first settled by people around 1823. The town of Sherman was officially created in 1824. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Mina.

The town was named after Roger Sherman. He was a very important person in American history. Roger Sherman was one of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence. This document announced that the American colonies were free from British rule.

Geography and Location

Sherman covers a total area of about 36.4 square miles (94.3 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 36.27 square miles (93.9 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.13 square miles (0.3 square kilometers), is water.

The Southern Tier Expressway, which includes Interstate 86 and New York State Highway 17, runs through the northern part of the town. You can get to Sherman from Exit 6, which is located on the south side of Sherman village.

Fun Events in Sherman

Sherman is a lively place with several interesting events happening throughout the year.
