History of Sherrill
Sherrill became a city in 1916. This happened through a special law passed by the state government. The city was named after Sherrill Babcock Sherman, the infant son of Congressman James S. Sherman.
Sherrill is special because its city rules say it should be treated like a village within the Town of Vernon. Most cities in New York are not under a town's control. However, the Vernon town government still has power over the Sherrill area.
In 1997, the Oneida tribe bought land inside the city. This led to a discussion about whether they needed to pay taxes on that land.
