Sherwood Forest is a famous woodland area in Nottinghamshire, England. It is most well-known for its strong connection to the legend of Robin Hood. Many stories say that Robin Hood and his Merry Men lived and hid in this forest.

Today, Sherwood Forest is a special place called a National Nature Reserve. It covers about 423.2 hectares (which is about 1,046 acres). The reserve is located around the village of Edwinstowe. It is just a small part of a much bigger forest that existed long ago.

What is Sherwood Forest?

Sherwood Forest got its name because it was the "shire wood" of Nottinghamshire. A "shire" is like a county. This means it was the main forest for the area. In the past, it was a huge royal hunting forest. Kings and queens used it for hunting animals like deer.

A Forest Through Time

The land where Sherwood Forest stands has been covered in trees for a very long time. Trees have grown there since the end of the Last Glacial Period. This was a time when much of the Earth was covered in ice. Scientists know this by studying tiny bits of pollen found in the ground.

In 1086, a very important book was made called the Domesday Book. This book listed all the land and property in England. At that time, Sherwood Forest was enormous. It covered about a quarter of Nottinghamshire. This included both woodlands and open heathland. Special "forest laws" were in place to protect the animals and trees for the king's hunts.

The Legend of Robin Hood

Sherwood Forest is famous worldwide because of the stories of Robin Hood. He was a legendary outlaw who supposedly stole from the rich to give to the poor. Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men were said to live deep within the forest. They used the dense trees as a hiding place from the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The Major Oak

One of the most famous trees in Sherwood Forest is the Major Oak. This ancient oak tree is believed to be over 1,000 years old! Legend says that Robin Hood and his Merry Men used the hollow trunk of the Major Oak as a hiding spot. They might have even slept inside it. Today, the Major Oak is a very popular attraction. It is supported by poles to help its old branches stay strong.

Sherwood Forest Today

Today, Sherwood Forest is a wonderful place for people to visit. It is managed to protect its old trees and wildlife. Visitors can walk along paths, explore the ancient woodlands, and learn about its history. There is also a visitor centre where you can find out more about the forest and its famous legends.
