Shiri Appleby is an American actress and television director. She is famous for her main roles as Liz Parker in the science fiction drama series Roswell (1999–2002). She also starred as Rachel Goldberg in the drama series Unreal (2015–2018).

She has been in several movies, including Swimfan (2002), Havoc (2005), and Charlie Wilson's War (2007). Shiri also played intern Daria Wade in the last season of the medical drama ER (2008–2009). Later, she starred as Cate Cassidy in Life Unexpected (2010–2011). She also had repeating roles in Chicago Fire (2012–2013) and Girls (2013–2014).

Early Life and Education

Shiri Appleby's mother was born in Israel and has Moroccan Jewish family roots. Her father grew up in Los Angeles and has Ashkenazi Jewish family roots. Before moving to the United States, Shiri's mother was an actress in Israel. When Shiri was young, her mother taught at a Hebrew school. Her father worked as a tour guide at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Shiri grew up in Calabasas, a middle-class area in Los Angeles County. Her family kept kosher in their home. She went to Hebrew school and had a Bat Mitzvah.

Shiri finished Calabasas High School in 1997. She then studied English at the University of Southern California from 1998 to 1999. After two years, she got the main role in Roswell. While filming Life Unexpected in 2010, Shiri started studying psychology online. She earned her degree in 14 months in 2012, while still working.

Acting Career Highlights

Shiri Appleby started acting when she was four years old. She appeared in commercials for products like Cheerios and M&M's. Her parents encouraged her to take acting classes because she was very shy. Her first commercial was for Raisin Bran, but it never aired.

She made guest appearances on many TV shows. Some of these include thirtysomething (1987) and Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989). She also appeared in ER (1994) and Baywatch (1989). Her big break came with the series Roswell (1999–2002). She first tried out for other roles before getting the main part of Liz Parker.

Music Videos and Early Roles

Shiri has also been in several music videos. She appeared in Bon Jovi's video for "It's My Life". She was also in Gavin DeGraw's 2004 video for "I Don't Want to Be". In 2006, she had a recurring role in the ABC drama Six Degrees. She played Anya, a young assistant. Later that year, she played Hildy Young in the USA Network series To Love and Die.

In 2007, Shiri was in the movie What Love Is. She also appeared in the film Charlie Wilson's War. In this movie, she played Charlie Wilson's press secretary. In 2008, Appleby had a recurring role on the final season of ER. She played an intern named Daria Wade. This was her second time on the show.

Main Roles and Directing

In 2010, Shiri Appleby starred in The CW network drama Life Unexpected. She played Cate Cassidy, a radio talk show host. Her daughter, whom she had given up for adoption, became part of her life. The show finished after two seasons.

In 2012, Shiri starred in Dating Rules from My Future Self. She also helped produce this web series.

In 2013, she had a role in the Lena Dunham HBO series, Girls. Shiri said this role helped her play different kinds of characters. She was often cast as sweet characters before this. Shiri became interested in directing while on the set of Girls. She learned from director Jesse Peretz. After reading with the cast, she was offered a part in the show.

In 2013, she got the main role in the Lifetime drama Unreal. This show was about what happens behind the scenes of a reality TV show. It started airing on June 1, 2015. To prepare for her role as a reality show producer, Shiri spent time with a real producer. She asked them many questions about their work. The show received good reviews and ran for four seasons. In 2016, Shiri directed her first episode of Unreal. She directed several more episodes of the series. The show ended in July 2018.

In 2017, Shiri Appleby starred in the movie Lemon. This film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2021, she had a small role in Roswell, New Mexico. She had also directed an episode in each of the first two seasons of that show. In 2023, she appeared in the movie Your Place or Mine.

Personal Life

Shiri Appleby welcomed a baby girl in March 2013. She later married the baby's father, chef and restaurant owner Jon Shook. Their second child, a son, was born in December 2015.

In Hebrew, the word shiri means "my song" or "my poem." It can also mean "sing" (when telling a girl to sing). Shiri said her parents told her that when she was born, she was like a song in their hearts.

She has a scar above her left eyebrow. She got it when a neighbor's dog bit her when she was young. To overcome her fear of dogs, she appeared on the show Emergency Vets. She went with veterinarian Kevin Fitzgerald. She also overcame another fear in the same episode by holding a live snake. Soon after, she adopted a tabby cat, which she named Abby.
