Shirley Silvey (born December 5, 1927 – died July 17, 2010) was an American animator. She helped create many famous cartoons. Some of her well-known works include Mr. Magoo, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, and George of the Jungle. Shirley Silvey was a true pioneer in animation. She was one of the very first women to work in this exciting field.

Shirley Silvey's Animation Journey

Shirley Silvey studied art at the Jepson Art Institute in Los Angeles. After she finished school, she started her career in the late 1950s. She joined a company called United Productions of America (UPA).

Starting at UPA Animation Studio

At UPA, Shirley worked on different parts of making cartoons. She helped with the layout, which is like planning the scenes. She also worked on storyboards, which are like comic strips that show the story. Plus, she designed characters for the cartoons.

Some of the cartoons Shirley Silvey helped create at UPA were Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol and 1001 Arabian Nights. She also worked on The Gerald McBoing-Boing Show.

Working with Jay Ward Productions

In 1959, Shirley Silvey moved to Jay Ward Productions. This was another big animation studio. There, she worked closely with Jay Ward on many popular animated shows.

Her work at Jay Ward Productions included The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and George of the Jungle. She also helped create Dudley Do-Right and Fractured Fairy Tales. Shirley even worked on the Cap'n Crunch television commercials. She stayed at Jay Ward Productions until 1973. For a short time, she also worked on Bugs Bunny cartoons at Warner Bros..

Shirley Silvey's Legacy

Shirley Silvey passed away on July 17, 2010, in Fresno, California. She was 82 years old. Her work helped shape many beloved cartoons that people still enjoy today. She is remembered as an important woman in the history of animation.
