Shivmangal Singh "Suman" (born August 5, 1915 – died November 27, 2002) was a famous Indian poet. He was also a respected scholar who wrote many works in the Hindi language. People often called him "Suman."

Early Life and Education

Shivmangal Singh 'Suman' was born on August 5, 1915. His birthplace was Jhagarpur, located in the Unnao district of what was then British India. He grew up to become a very important Hindi writer and poet.

Suman studied at Benaras Hindu University. There, he earned advanced degrees in Hindi. These included a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy). A Ph.D. is a very high academic degree. In 1950, the university also gave him an honorary D.Litt. degree. This is a special award for great achievements in literature.

Suman's Career and Contributions

Shivmangal Singh Suman held many important positions during his life. From 1968 to 1978, he was the Vice Chancellor of Vikram University in Ujjain. A Vice Chancellor is like the head of a university. He also served as the Vice-President of the Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan in Lucknow.

From 1956 to 1961, Suman worked for the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal. He was a Press and Cultural Attache, helping to share Indian culture. Later, from 1977 to 1978, he was the President of the Association of Indian Universities in New Delhi. He also led the Kalidas Academy in Ujjain until his death.

Suman passed away on November 27, 2002. India's Prime Minister at the time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, spoke about Suman's importance. He said that Suman was not just a great Hindi poet. He also spoke for the feelings and ideas of his time. His writings shared his own emotions and offered brave comments on the issues of his era.
