History of Shoppers World
The idea for Shoppers World Brampton started in 1961. Two companies, Elder Mines & Development Ltd. and Peel Village Developments, had already built another mall called Shoppers World Danforth. They decided to team up and create a new company, Peel-Elder Limited, to build this mall.
The mall was built on what used to be a farmer's field. In 1961, the plans included about 55 stores, a department store, bowling alleys, and even a movie theatre! Some of the first stores planned were Loblaws, Zellers, and Tip Top Tailors.
Opening Its Doors
Shoppers World Brampton first opened in 1969. It was a big deal because it was Brampton's very first indoor mall! When it first opened, it had 25 stores. Some of the main stores were Kmart, Dominion, and Canada Safeway.
The movie theatre at the mall closed around 1985. It was later changed into a video rental store called Jumbo Video. The Canada Safeway store was the first of its kind in eastern Canada. When it opened, some people protested because of a grape strike happening in California. One person was even arrested during the protest.
Growing Bigger
In 1971, a large department store called Simpsons Ltd. decided to open a location at the mall. This was a huge expansion, costing over $2 million. The new Simpsons store was designed to be very modern and spacious.
Around the same time, Peel-Elder Ltd. planned to make the mall even bigger. They wanted to add more stores, apartments, and even a hotel and office building nearby. This expansion plan caused some discussion in the community.
The mall grew a lot with the 1972 expansion. It went from 25 stores and 350,000 square feet to 118 stores and 600,000 square feet! The goal was to eventually have 140 stores and 1 million square feet of space.
Changes in the 1980s
In the early 1980s, the mall went through a big renovation called "Phase Two." This added 30 new stores, bringing the total to 185. Phase Two opened on March 10, 1982. There were even plans for a "Phase Three" to start soon after.
For a short time, from 1984 to 1985, the mall even had an indoor water park called White Water!
Recent Years
Around 2000, the mall changed owners and was bought by RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust. They still own it today.
In recent times, Shoppers World Brampton has seen many changes. While it's still a busy place, newer malls like Bramalea City Centre and Heartland Town Centre have also become popular.
A large Canadian Tire store was added to the mall, which changed its look quite a bit. To make space for it, some smaller stores moved or closed, and a new part of the mall was built. Staples also moved into the mall.
The former Simpsons store, which later became The Bay and then a Sears Outlet, was taken down in 2010. That area was redeveloped, and now many of those stores can only be entered from outside the mall.
A Target store opened in 2013 in the space where Zellers and Kmart used to be. However, Target closed all its Canadian stores in 2015. Now, that big space is home to stores like Giant Tiger, GoodLife Fitness, Staples, and JYSK.
In 2019, the mall's owners, RioCan, shared plans to completely change Shoppers World Brampton. They want to turn it into a new neighborhood with 5,000 homes, along with shops and other buildings. This big project could take up to thirty years to finish, possibly by 2040.
