Jysk A/S (pronounced "YUHSK") is a big Danish company. It sells many things for your home. You can find mattresses, furniture, and decorations there.

Jysk is the largest Danish store chain that operates worldwide. It has over 3,100 stores in 51 different countries. The name Jysk means "Jutlandic," which refers to a part of Denmark.

A man named Lars Larsen started Jysk. He opened the very first store in April 1979. It was in the city of Aarhus, Denmark. Today, Lars Larsen's family still owns the company. They own it through a group called Lars Larsen Group.

The Jysk logo shows a goose. This animal has been part of the brand's story for a long time. Because Jysk products often have a simple, clean design like other Scandinavian items, some people call it the "Danish IKEA" but in a smaller size.

The Story of Jysk: How It Grew

Starting Out: 1979-1989

The very first Jysk store opened on April 2, 1979. It was called Jysk Sengetøjslager. This store was in Aarhus, Denmark, and it is still open today!

Jysk started to grow outside Denmark in 1984. It opened its first store in Germany. Also, the first Jysk franchise store opened in Greenland. In 1986, Jysk expanded to the Faroe Islands.

In 1987, Jysk opened a store in Iceland. It was called "Rúmfatalagerinn" there. The next year, in 1988, Jysk came to Norway. Its first store opened in Stavanger.

Growing Bigger: 1990-1999

Jysk continued to open stores in new countries. In 1995, the first Jysk store opened in Finland.

A year later, in 1996, Jysk opened its first store in Canada. It was located in Coquitlam, British Columbia. By 1998, the company celebrated a big milestone. It had opened its 500th store!

New Century, New Growth: 2000-2009

In 2000, Jysk opened its first store in Poland. A big change happened in 2001. Jysk stores in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland changed their names. They all became simply "Jysk."

In 2004, Jysk opened its first store in Hungary. The company also built a huge warehouse in Denmark in 2008. It is one of Northern Europe's largest warehouses. In the same year, Jysk opened its first stores in the United Kingdom.

Expanding Worldwide: 2010-2019

In 2010, Jysk received a special honor. It was named a "purveyor" to the Queen of Denmark. This means the Queen uses their products.

Jysk also started its own TV channel online in 2011. In 2013, Jysk opened its first store in Yerevan, Armenia. This was the first Jysk store in the Caucasus region.

Jysk continued to expand into Asia. Stores opened in Jakarta, Indonesia, starting in 2014. In 2016, Jysk opened its first store in Singapore. It also expanded to Belarus and Tajikistan.

More countries joined the Jysk family in 2017 and 2018. Stores opened in Kuwait and Dubai. In 2019, Jysk opened its first store in Thailand and Baku. It also opened a new logistics center in Bulgaria.

Jysk also opened its first store in the Republic of Ireland in 2019. They planned to open many more stores there. Sadly, Lars Larsen, the founder of Jysk, passed away on August 19, 2019.

Recent Years: 2020-Present

In 2020, Jysk opened its first store in Moscow, Russia. Also, some stores that used to be called "Dänisches Bettenlager" changed their name to "Jysk." This happened in Austria in 2020 and in Germany in 2021. In Iceland, the stores changed from "Rúmfatalagerinn" to "Jysk" in 2023.

After the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022, Jysk closed its 13 stores in Russia. On March 30, they announced they would close them permanently and leave Russia.

Jysk Stores Around the World

Jysk stores are usually medium-sized. They are about 1,300 square meters (14,000 sq ft) on average.

Jysk operates its stores in a few different ways. Some are run by "Jysk Nordic." These are in places like Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe. Other stores are run by "Dänisches Bettenlager." These are mainly in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal.

Jysk also has "franchise" agreements. This means other companies run Jysk stores in certain countries. These include places like Canada, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Thailand, and Vietnam.
