Discovering the Shrine's History
After World War I, people wanted to build a memorial for the soldiers who had fallen. They raised money from the public to make this happen. In 1928, a competition was held to find the best design for the memorial.
Two architects from Sydney, Buchanan and Cowper, won the competition. They suggested a design that looked like ancient Greek buildings. The Shrine took two years to build. It was officially opened on 11 November 1930, which was Armistice Day, by Governor John Goodwin. A special plaque was placed to mark the dedication.
Exploring the Shrine's Architecture
The Shrine of Remembrance was designed in a style called Greek Classic Revival. This means it looks like ancient Greek temples. The tall columns of the Shrine are made from Helidon sandstone. Inside the Shrine, a brass urn holds the 'Eternal Flame', which burns forever.
The steps leading up to the Shrine from ANZAC Square are made of Queensland granite. There are 18 columns on the Shrine. These columns represent the year 1918, which is when World War I officially ended.
Remembering Heroes: The Memorial
In the lower part of the Shrine of Remembrance, there is a special underground room called a crypt. This crypt holds the Shrine of Memories for both World War I and World War II. Inside, you can find memorial plaques that honor many Australian regiments. These regiments fought bravely in different campaigns during these wars.
On the outside wall of the Shrine of Memories, there is also a sculpture. This sculpture is a memorial specifically for World War I.
Special Services and Ceremonies
Every year, on ANZAC Day, which is April 25th, a special Dawn memorial service is held at the Shrine of Remembrance. During this service, people lay wreaths around the 'Eternal Flame'. This is done to remember all the people who died in conflicts.
Another important service is held each year on Remembrance Day, which is November 11th. On this day, wreaths are also laid at the 'Eternal Flame' to honor those who served.
