Shun Fat Supermarket began in the mid-1990s. A smart business person named Hieu Tai Tran started the company. The very first store opened in Monterey Park, California. This area is known for its large Chinese American community.

In June 2013, Shun Fat Supermarket opened its first store in Texas. This was the Dallas Superstore. Then, in June 2019, the chain opened its first store in Oregon. This new location was in Portland. It was the fifteenth Shun Fat store to open.
In 2017, Shun Fat sold two of its original locations. The stores in Monterey Park and Rowland Heights were sold to another company.
