History of Sibley
Sibley was created by a couple named Eddie and Edythe Hagglund. They started building it in 1954. They noticed that Lake Ashtabula nearby was very popular.
Starting a New Town
The Hagglunds thought that a hamburger restaurant would do well there. So, they bought some land near the lake. They started building different places, like a dance hall and the restaurant.
Becoming a City
The Hagglunds wanted to get a special permit called a liquor license for their businesses. However, the local government, Sibley Trail Township, would not give them one. Because of this, the Hagglunds decided to make their area an official city. This way, they could get the license themselves.
The city was named after Henry Hastings Sibley. He was a general and the very first Governor of Minnesota.
Changes Over Time
In the 1970s, the Hagglunds sold most of the city to other people. They kept the main businesses that they had started. Even after Eddie passed away, Edythe continued to own these core businesses for many years. In 2007, Edythe announced that the remaining parts of the city would be sold at an auction.
