Sierra Point is a special piece of land that sticks out into the San Francisco Bay. It's not a natural part of the land; it was actually built by people using landfill! You can find it in Brisbane, California, which is in San Mateo County, California. A small part of it even reaches into South San Francisco, California.

Sierra Point is home to many modern office buildings, like the Dakin Building. It also has the Brisbane Marina, a place where boats can dock. If you like walking or biking, the San Francisco Bay Trail goes right along the edge of Sierra Point and continues south.

How Sierra Point Was Made

Sierra Point covers about 132 acres, which is like 100 football fields! This land was created by filling in parts of the San Francisco Bay with materials. About 102 acres are used for office buildings, and 30 acres are for the Brisbane Marina.

Before it became a business area, Sierra Point was used as a landfill from 1965 to 1972. This means people dumped trash there. They built a large dirt wall around the area first. Each day, the trash was covered with soil from nearby Candlestick Point.

In 1975, a company called Sierra Point Development Company bought the land. They later gave about 20 acres to the City of Brisbane in 1980 to build the marina. Building started in 1982. By 1996, most of the landfill area was covered with a thick layer of clean soil and clay to make it safe.

Sierra Point has grown a lot over the years. It has many office buildings and even hotels. Some areas are still being developed for new businesses, including places for science and technology companies.

The Brisbane Marina

The Brisbane Marina was finished in 1983. It's a large harbor that can hold up to 580 boats! A private company built the marina, and the city helped pay for it. In return, the company got to develop the rest of Sierra Point.

The Sierra Point Yacht Club was started in 1984 for people who love boating. They first met in restaurants and then rented a building. In 2000, the club moved into its current home near the southeast part of Sierra Point.

Office Buildings and Future Plans

Many companies have offices at Sierra Point. The Dakin Building was one of the first to be built. There are also plans for new buildings, especially for companies that work in biotechnology (which studies living things to create new products). Some areas are set aside for hotels and shops too.

Getting Around Sierra Point

Sierra Point is easy to reach from U.S. Highway 101, a major road that runs along the San Francisco Peninsula. There are special exits that lead right to Sierra Point Parkway, the main road in the area.

Even though the Caltrain tracks (for passenger trains) run nearby, there isn't a train stop directly at Sierra Point. The closest train stations are in Bayshore to the north and South San Francisco to the south.
