Where Does the Sierra Currant Grow?

The Sierra currant grows naturally in several mountain ranges. You can find it in California, including the Peninsular Ranges and Sierra Nevada. It also grows in western Nevada. Sometimes, it has been found in Oregon too.

This plant likes to grow in forests. It also lives near rivers and streams, which are called riparian areas. It can be found high up in the mountains, from about 3,000–10,000 feet (910–3,050 m) above sea level.

What Does the Sierra Currant Look Like?

The Ribes nevadense is a shrub that stands upright. It usually grows about 1–2 metres (3.3–6.6 ft) tall.

Leaves

Its leaves can be up to 8 centimeters (about 3.2 inches) long. They feel a bit sticky because they have tiny glands. The leaves are slightly divided into a few rounded sections. These sections have dull, small teeth along their edges.

Flowers

The flowers grow in a cluster called a raceme. This cluster can have up to 20 flowers. They can hang down or stand up on the branches. Each flower has five pinkish-red parts called sepals. These sepals look like petals. Inside, there are five smaller white petals that form a tube.

Fruit

The fruit of the Sierra currant is a berry. It is blue-black and can be eaten. Each berry is less than a centimeter wide. It feels a bit waxy and has tiny, sticky hairs on its surface.
