Simone's Early Life and Music Journey

Simone Simons was born in Hoensbroek, a town in the Netherlands. It is close to the borders of Germany and Belgium. She has a younger sister named Janneke. Janneke was born on Simone's second birthday.

When Simone was 10, she started taking singing lessons. She also learned to play the flute for two years. At age 12, she joined a music school. At 15, she changed her singing lessons from pop/jazz to classical singing. She became very interested in classical music. This happened after she heard Nightwish's album Oceanborn. She was especially impressed by Tarja Turunen's voice. Simone also sang in a choir for a few months. Later, at 17, she joined Epica. She met Mark Jansen through a fan club website.

Simone has mentioned some of her favorite bands and artists. These include Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Tristania, Kamelot, and Within Temptation. She also enjoys classical music, like the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Joining the Band Epica

In early 2002, Mark Jansen left his previous band, After Forever. He wanted to create a new music project. This project would focus on classical and symphonic music. It was first called "Sahara Dust." In late 2002, the band looked for a lead singer. They first considered Helena Iren Michaelsen. But soon after, Simone Simons joined as the new singer.
