Simone's Early Life and Music Journey
Simone Simons was born in Hoensbroek, a town in the Netherlands. It is close to the borders of Germany and Belgium. She has a younger sister named Janneke.
Simone started taking singing lessons when she was 10 years old. She also learned to play the flute for two years. At age 12, she joined a music school. When she was 15, she changed her singing style from pop/jazz to classical. She became very interested in classical music after hearing Tarja Turunen's voice from the band Nightwish. Simone also sang in a choir for a few months.
How Simone Joined Epica
Simone met Mark Jansen through a fan club website. She later joined the band Epica when she was 17. She has mentioned that bands like Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and Within Temptation influenced her music. She also enjoys classical music by composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Simone's Time with Epica
In early 2002, Mark Jansen left his previous band. He wanted to create a new music project with a more classical and symphonic sound. This project was first called "Sahara Dust." Later in 2002, Simone Simons joined the band as the lead singer.
Simone's Personal Life
Simone Simons has faced some health challenges. In 2008, she had an infection that caused Epica to cancel many shows. She got better, and another singer, Amanda Somerville, filled in for her during some tours.
Simone is married to Oliver Palotai, who is a keyboard player for the band Kamelot. They have a son named Vincent, who was born in 2013. The family lives in Stuttgart, Germany.
