Where is Singen Located?
Singen is an important city in the Hegau area of southern Germany. It is very close to Lake Constance and just north of the border with Switzerland.
Famous Places in Singen
The most famous landmark in Singen is Hohentwiel. This is an old volcanic hill with the ruins of a large fortress on top. French soldiers destroyed parts of this fortress during the Napoleonic Wars a long time ago.
The "Singen Route" in World War II
During World War II, Singen became known for a special escape path called the "Singen route." This route led into Switzerland, which was a neutral country. A Dutch naval officer named Hans Larive discovered this safe way to cross the border. He learned about it from a German officer after he was caught near Singen. Many prisoners later used this secret route to escape from prison camps, including Larive himself and other famous escapees from Colditz Castle.

Singen is a busy place for trains. It has three railway lines and is the end point of the Gäu Railway. This means you can easily travel by train from Singen to cities like Stuttgart in Germany and Schaffhausen in Switzerland.
