Admiral Sir Richard Poore, 4th Baronet (born July 7, 1853 – died December 8, 1930) was an important officer in the Royal Navy, the United Kingdom's navy. He eventually became the Commander-in-Chief, The Nore, which meant he was in charge of a very important naval base.

Sir Richard Poore's Naval Journey

Sir Richard Poore began his naval career by serving in a special group called the Naval Brigade. In 1875, he was part of a military mission in Malaya.

Later, in 1882, he took part in a naval attack called the Bombardment of Alexandria in Egypt. He also joined a mission in 1884 to help General Gordon in Sudan, which unfortunately did not succeed.

In 1897, he became the captain of a ship named HMS Hawke. While leading this ship, he helped bring peace to Crete later that year. In 1898, he was given command of another large warship, HMS Illustrious, which was serving in the Mediterranean Sea.

By 1900, he was appointed as the flag captain for HMS Vivid. This meant he was a senior captain, serving at the main naval base in Devonport. In 1901, he was chosen to be a special aide to King Edward VII.

In 1902, he took command of a powerful warship called HMS Jupiter, which was part of the Channel Fleet. This fleet protected the waters around Britain.

Sir Richard Poore became a Rear Admiral in 1904, overseeing ships in the Mediterranean and Channel Fleets. In 1908, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the Australia Station, leading naval operations around Australia.

Finally, in 1911, he became the Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. He held this important position even during the start of World War I. He retired from the navy in 1917. After his retirement, in 1920, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant for Wiltshire, which is a ceremonial role in a county.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Sir Richard Poore received several important awards for his service:

  • In 1905, he was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. This award is given by the King or Queen for special service to the monarch.
  • In 1909, he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. This is a very high honor for military officers.
  • In 1919, he was given permission to wear the decoration of a Grand Officier of the Legion of Honour from France. This was for his excellent service during World War I.
  • Also in 1919, he received permission to wear the decoration of Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown of Italy from Italy, also for his important work during the war.

Sir Richard Poore's Family Life

In 1885, Sir Richard Poore married Ida Margaret Graves. Her father was a bishop, and she was the aunt of a famous poet named Robert Graves.

Sir Richard and Ida had one son:

  • Sub-Lieutenant Robert Poore, who was also in the Royal Navy. He was born in 1886 and sadly lost his life in battle on September 19, 1915.

Sir Richard Poore lived at the East End Manor in Durrington, England. He passed away in Vevey, Switzerland, in 1930. After his death, his special title of Baronet was passed to his nephew, Edward Poore. His wife, Ida, who also wrote several books, died in Switzerland in 1941.
