Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Roger Lort (born around 1607 or 1608, died 1664) was an important person from Wales. He was known for writing poems in a style called Neo-Latin. He also became the first Baronet of his family.

Sir Roger Lort's Life Story

Sir Roger Lort was the oldest son of Henry Lort. His family lived at Stackpole Court in a place called St Petrox, in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

He started studying at Wadham College, Oxford in 1624. His brother, Sampson Lort, joined him there in 1625. Roger officially enrolled at the college on November 3, 1626.

He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), on June 11, 1627. In the same year, he began studying law at a famous place called the Middle Temple in London.

Role in the English Civil War

When the First English Civil War began, Sir Roger Lort supported the King. He helped the Earl of Carbery to gather support for the King's side in Pembrokeshire.

However, the Parliament's side saw him as a troublemaker. On April 19, 1643, the House of Commons ordered him to be brought in.

Roger Lort eventually agreed to work with the Parliament. He served on committees for Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, and Cardiganshire. Because of this, he was no longer seen as a troublemaker. He got his property and belongings back.

In March 1649, Roger and his brother Sampson took on a job. They agreed to supply food and other necessities to ships. These ships were arriving at Milford Haven or Tenby in Wales.

Later Years and Honors

Sir Roger Lort continued to be active in public life. He worked as a Justice of the Peace, which meant he helped keep law and order. He also served on various committees until 1656.

When the King was about to return to power, in what was called the English Restoration, Roger Lort again showed his support for the King.

As a reward for his loyalty, he was given a special title. He became a baronet on January 31, 1662. This was a high honor from the King.

Sir Roger Lort passed away in 1664. He was buried in the church at St Petrox.

His Writings

In 1646, Sir Roger Lort published a small book in London. It was called Epigrammatum liber primus. This book contained short, clever poems. He was inspired by another writer named Christopher Ocland.

His Family

Sir Roger Lort was married twice. His first wife was Hester Annesley. They were married around May 3, 1632. Hester was the daughter of Francis Annesley, 2nd Viscount Valentia.

His second wife was Joan Wyndham. She was the daughter of Humphrey Wyndham from Dunraven Castle in Glamorganshire. After Roger died, Joan married again to Sir Edward Mansel.

Sir Roger Lort had two sons and four daughters. His son John (born around 1637, died 1678) took over his title and estate after him.
