Col. Sir William Arthington Worsley, 4th Baronet (April 5, 1890 – December 4, 1973) was an important English landowner. He was also a talented amateur first-class cricketer. He played for Yorkshire and even captained the team.
About William Worsley
William Worsley was born at Hovingham Hall in Yorkshire, England. His father was Sir William Henry Arthington Worsley. His mother was Lady Augusta Mary.
He went to two well-known schools. These were Ludgrove School and Eton College. Later, he served in the military during World War I. He was a lieutenant and then a captain in the Green Howards regiment. During the war, he was injured and became a prisoner.
From 1951 to 1965, William Worsley held an important role. He was the Lord Lieutenant of the North Riding of Yorkshire. This meant he was the King or Queen's personal representative in that area.
In 1967, the University of Leeds gave him a special award. It was an honorary degree called an LLD. His own daughter, who was the Chancellor of the university, presented him with this award.
His Family
William Worsley married Joyce Morgan Brunner on May 20, 1924. They were married at St. Margaret's, Westminster. Joyce was the daughter of Sir John Brunner, 2nd Baronet.
William and Joyce had four children together:
- Sir (William) Marcus John Worsley, 5th Baronet (1925–2012)
- (George) Oliver Worsley (1927–2010)
- John Arthington Worsley (1928–2022)
- Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley (born 1933)
His daughter Katharine married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. When she married him, she became the Duchess of Kent.
His Cricket Career
William Worsley was a skilled cricketer. He captained the Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1928 and 1929. These were his only seasons playing first-class cricket. He had been asked to be captain earlier, in 1924, but he could not accept due to his business work.
He took over as captain after Major Arthur Lupton. There was some discussion about who would be captain before Worsley took the role. The team only lost two games while he was captain. He received his county cap in 1928.
William Worsley was a right-handed batsman. He scored 722 runs in his career. His highest score was 60 runs against Hampshire. He also caught 32 balls in the field. His great-uncle, George Cayley, also played cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Cambridge University.
He became the President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1960. He held this position until he passed away in 1973. He was also the President of the MCC in 1962.
