The Story of Six Flags Darien Lake
How it All Began: Paul Snyder's Vision
The area where Darien Lake is located was first dug out and filled with water in 1954. It was already a favorite place for swimming. In 1964, a smart investor named Paul Snyder bought some land next to the lake. He started a small campground with 23 spots and a picnic area.
Paul Snyder kept buying more land, eventually owning nearly 1,000 acres! This land included seven lakes, with Darien Lake being the biggest. He added fish to one of the smaller lakes, increased the number of campsites, and brought in more activities for guests. These activities included a small petting zoo, horseback riding, paddleboats, skateboarding, tennis courts, and miniature golf.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Paul Snyder added even more attractions. He built water slides on a hill near the park's entrance called Rainbow Mountain. This officially turned the area into an amusement park, which was then called Darien Lake Fun Country. Snyder also made a special deal with a German company called HUSS Park Attractions. This deal allowed Darien Lake to show off HUSS's new rides to buyers from North America. Because of this, the park got exciting rides like Pirate, Ranger, Thrillbilly, and Corn Popper. In 1982, the park opened its first big roller coaster, the Viper.
New Owners and Big Changes: Funtime Parks Takes Over
In 1983, Paul Snyder sold half of the park to a company called Funtime, Inc.. They owned other parks too. The park's name became simply Darien Lake. Funtime immediately started making big improvements. Their first addition was a huge Vekoma-built Ferris wheel. This Ferris wheel had been shown at the 1982 World's Fair and was the largest in the United States at that time!
Funtime also brought live shows to the park. They built the Tops Jubilee Theater (later the Grande Theatre) and the Lakeside Amphitheater, a large stage for concerts. Many famous bands played there. A wide-angle movie theater called Cinema 2000 was also added.
In the late 1980s, a water skiing show called Splashmania entertained guests on Fun Lake. More improvements came in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1988, a themed area for kids called Adventure Land for Kids opened. In 1989, the Grizzly Run river rapids ride was added. In 1990, six new water slides were built, and the water park was officially named Barracuda Bay. At first, you needed an extra ticket for Barracuda Bay, but later it was included with park admission.
Following the success of another wooden coaster at a sister park, Funtime hired a company to build a new wooden roller coaster for Darien Lake. The Predator roller coaster opened in May 1990 and was very popular. Around this time, Paul Snyder sold his remaining share of the park to Funtime, giving them full control.
In 1992, a cool laser light show called Laser Light Fantasy started, featuring laser graphics and fireworks. In 1993, this show moved permanently to the Lakeside Amphitheater. Bigger concerts moved to the new and larger Darien Lake Performing Arts Center. In 1994, the old Rainbow Mountain water slides were replaced with new ones called 'Cuda Falls. Barracuda Bay then became part of the regular park admission.
Becoming Six Flags Darien Lake
In 1995, a growing park company called Premier Parks bought Funtime, Inc. and its parks. Premier Parks quickly started making changes and adding new things to Darien Lake. In 1995, Skycoaster opened over Fun Lake. In 1996, the Adventure Land for Kids area was replaced by Popeye's Seaport, which had brand new rides for little kids, including a small Ferris wheel and a train ride. A new miniature golf course also opened.
The water park expanded in 1996 and 1997 with Hook's Lagoon (a children's area) and the Crocodile Isle wave pool. Many new food places and better paths were also added. Three old rides from Adventure Land for Kids were moved to another part of the park in 1997 and called the Tiny Trio. From 1996 to 1999, Premier Parks added a new roller coaster every year: the enclosed Nightmare At Phantom Cave in 1996, the inverted The Mind Eraser in 1997, the shuttle Boomerang: Coast to Coaster in 1998, and the Superman – Ride of Steel hypercoaster in 1999.
Nightmare At Phantom Cave was moved to another park in 1998. In 1998, Premier Parks bought the famous Six Flags company and started renaming its parks with the Six Flags name. In May 1999, Six Flags Darien Lake opened with its new name and many changes. Premier Parks brought popular characters like Looney Tunes and DC Comics superheroes to the park. Popeye's Seaport became Looney Tunes Seaport, and a Batman show was added. Some water slides were removed from Barracuda Bay. The Cinema 2000 theater was replaced by a Scrambler ride, and a new gift shop opened. The Crazy Quilt Calypso ride was replaced with the Lasso Wave Swinger.
In 2000, Premier Parks officially changed its name to Six Flags Inc. They continued adding new attractions, including the Twister Top Spin ride in 2000 and the Shipwreck Falls shoot-the-chutes ride in 2002. The Tornado water slide was added to Barracuda Bay in 2005.
More Changes in Ownership
In 2006, Six Flags decided to sell several parks, including Darien Lake. In 2007, Darien Lake and six other parks were sold to a company called PARC Management. PARC Management then leased the park from CNL Lifestyle.
Because the sale happened close to the park's opening, not many big changes could be made for the 2007 season. All Six Flags, Looney Tunes, and DC Comics signs were removed, and the park's name went back to simply Darien Lake. The Looney Tunes Seaport children's area was renamed Adventure Isle. In 2008, the park introduced the Moto Coaster, its first launched roller coaster. PARC Management also aimed to lower ticket prices. The Floodgate Falls slide closed after the 2008 season.
In March 2010, Darien Lake renamed Barracuda Bay to Splashtown at Darien Lake and began a big expansion of the water park. They added new attractions like a 16-foot-wide (4.9 m) lazy river called Flotation Station, the Swirl City four-slide complex, and a kiddie wave pool called Lazy Days Lagoon. Also in 2010, the Viper roller coaster was repainted, The Predator got new trains, and the Critter Chase Balloon Race ride was added to the Beaver Brothers Bay children's area (formerly Adventure Isle).
In 2011, Herschend assumed day-to-day operation and management of Darien Lake. A new children's area called Rowdy's Ridge opened in 2012 with several family rides. For the 2013 season, the Blast Off drop tower was installed. Many rides like the Grand Carousel and Giant Wheel were updated, and new food options appeared. The laser show was improved and rebranded to Ignite the Night. The UFO ride and 'Cuda Falls waterslides were removed, but the Scrambler ride returned after being stored for two years.
Herschend's lease ended after the 2014 season, and Premier Parks, LLC took over. New rides added during this time included Rolling Thunder (a 72 feet (22 m) Larson Loop), Brain Drain (two dropping body water slides), and Ripcurl Racer (a six-lane racing water slide). In 2016, CNL Lifestyle sold Darien Lake and other parks to EPR Properties. Premier Parks, LLC continued to operate the park. Tantrum, a new Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter roller coaster, opened for the 2018 season.
Six Flags Returns!
In May 2018, Six Flags once again took over operating the park, though EPR Properties still owned it. For the 2019 season, the park brought back the name Six Flags Darien Lake. However, the Looney Tunes or DC Comics characters did not return. SkyScreamer, a tall swing ride, was also added that season. For the 2020 season, a new water slide called Wahoo Wave was planned for the newly renamed Hurricane Harbor water park.
Even though Wahoo Wave was installed, the park did not open in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, except for the campgrounds. The park reopened in 2021.
