Where the River Flows

The Small River Lea starts its journey from the Old River Lea. This happens just below a place called Kings Weir. From there, it flows under the River Lee Navigation. It goes through a special bridge for water, which is called an aqueduct. This aqueduct is located near Aqueduct Lock.

Journey South

The river then meets another stream called Turnford Brook. This meeting happens near Turnford. After this, the Small River Lea gently winds its way south. It passes by several lakes, like North Metropolitan Lake and Cheshunt Lake. It also flows next to the West Anglia Main Line railway tracks.

Passing Through Towns

The river forms a border near the Lee Valley youth hostel in Cheshunt. It then flows under Windmill Lane, close to Cheshunt railway station. The river continues its path near the Lea Valley railway line. It flows between Bowyers Water and the main River Lee Navigation.

Reaching the End

Next, the Small River Lea goes under the A121 road. This is near Waltham Cross to the west and Waltham Abbey to the east. The river then passes under the large M25 motorway. It enters an area called Rammey Marsh. Finally, it joins with Turkey Brook below Enfield Lock. This meeting point is close to the A1055 road.

River Life

The Small River Lea mostly flows hidden away. It is in a deep channel. The water can be shallow, and sometimes it gets polluted. Because of this, it is not a place known for fishing.

Important for Fish

However, this river is still very important for fish. It acts as a valuable area where fish can lay their eggs. It is also a safe place for young fish to grow. This makes it a key part of the local environment.
