History of Smiths Station

Smiths Station was first settled a very long time ago, in 1738. A railroad line, the Central of Georgia Railway, was built through the community in 1845. This connected it to cities like Columbus, Georgia and Opelika, Alabama. The train station was named after Broadus Smith, an important early settler who lived nearby.

There's a local story that around 1960, a person named Jon Ergan got tired of writing "Smiths Station." So, he decided to just drop "Station" from the name!

Smiths Station officially became a city on June 22, 2001. It was one of the newest cities in Alabama at that time.
