Arnica griscomii, also known as Snow Arnica, is a fascinating plant. It belongs to the sunflower family, which means it's related to many other plants with bright, daisy-like flowers. This plant was first described in 1924 by a scientist named Merritt Lyndon Fernald.
Discovering Snow Arnica
Snow Arnica is a type of plant that grows in cold, northern places. It is found in both Asia and North America. This plant is special because it can survive in chilly environments.
Where Snow Arnica Grows
You can find Snow Arnica in eastern Russia, which is part of Asia. In North America, it grows in Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. It also lives in eastern Canada, specifically in Quebec and Newfoundland. These areas are often very cold and snowy, which is how the plant got its common name.
Different Kinds of Snow Arnica
Just like there can be different types of dogs, there can be different types of plants within the same species. These are called subspecies. Arnica griscomii has two main subspecies:
- Arnica griscomii subsp. frigida: This subspecies grows in Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia. The word "frigida" means "cold," which fits where it lives!
- Arnica griscomii subsp. griscomii: This subspecies is found in Quebec and Newfoundland in eastern Canada. It's the original type of Snow Arnica that the species was named after.
