Sofya Zhuk's Tennis Journey
Starting Out in Tennis
Sofya Zhuk trained at the Justine Henin Academy in Belgium. Later, she moved to the USA and trained at the IMG Academy. In 2018, she moved to Miami, Florida, to continue her training.
In 2014, when she was only 14 years old, Sofya won her first professional tournament in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. This was a big achievement! She became one of only 17 players in the history of the ITF to win an open tournament at such a young age. Famous players like Justine Henin and Dinara Safina also achieved this.
Winning Wimbledon as a Junior
In 2015, Sofya Zhuk, then 15, played in the Wimbledon junior tournament. She was not expected to win, but she surprised everyone! She won the junior girls' title without losing a single set throughout the entire tournament. In the final, she beat another Russian player, Anna Blinkova. Sofya was only the second Russian girl to win the Wimbledon junior title.
Playing on the WTA Tour
In 2016, Sofya made her first appearance on the WTA Tour, which is where professional women's tennis players compete. She played in the 2016 Miami Open after getting a special invitation called a "wildcard." She lost her first match to Zhang Shuai.
Highlights of 2018 and 2019
In 2018, Sofya played in the qualifying rounds for the Australian Open. She then reached her first big final at a WTA 125 tournament in Newport Beach, California. She played against Danielle Collins and, after winning the first set, she lost the match.
Later that year, at the Indian Wells tournament, Sofya had some amazing wins. She got her first ever win on the main WTA Tour by beating Alizé Cornet. She then went on to beat Magdalena Rybarikova, who was a higher-ranked player. One game in that match lasted over 20 minutes with many ties! Even though she lost to Danielle Collins again in the next round, Sofya reached her highest ever ranking, becoming No. 116 in the world.
She also played in the qualifying rounds for the French Open and Wimbledon in 2018.
Pausing Her Career
In 2020, Sofya Zhuk announced that she had decided to take a break from tennis. This was because she had been dealing with ongoing injuries. She mentioned that she might consider coming back to play in the future.
Awards and Recognition
- 2015: Sofya Zhuk received the Russian Cup in the "Junior of the Year" category. This award recognized her great achievements as a young tennis player.
