Sonic the Hedgehog was a popular American comic book series. It was published by Archie Comics along with Sega. The comic stories were based on Sega's fun video game series. They also took ideas from the 1993 animated TV show with the same name.

The comic started with a short four-issue series in 1992-1993. The first full comic issue came out in April 1993. This series ran for a very long time, with 290 issues over more than 20 years! In 2008, it even made it into the Guinness World Records. It was named the "longest-running comic series based on a video game". The series ended in 2017 when Sega and Archie Comics decided to stop working together.

The Sonic the Hedgehog comic had many characters. Some were from the video games, and others were new. The main stories followed a group called the Freedom Fighters. They were led by Sonic himself. They fought against the evil Doctor Eggman and other villains.

While the comic had its own unique stories, it also used parts of the Sonic video games. In 2013, the comic series was updated. This change made the comic stories more like the video games. It also removed some characters from the comic's history.

Over the years, many other Sonic comics were created. These spin-off comics focused on different characters or stories.

  • Sonic Universe told stories about side characters from the main series.
  • Knuckles the Echidna focused on Knuckles and his friends, the Chaotix.
  • Sonic X was based on the Japanese anime TV show from 2003.
  • Sonic Boom was based on both the cartoon and video game series.

The Sonic comic also had two special crossover events. In these, Sonic teamed up with characters from Archie's Mega Man comic series. Mega Man is another popular video game series from Capcom.

After the Archie Comics series ended, a new Sonic comic series began. IDW Publishing started publishing new Sonic comics in April 2018. Ian Flynn, a writer who worked on the Archie series, joined IDW to help create stories for the new comics.

The History of Sonic Comics

The Sonic the Hedgehog comic first appeared in the US. It started as a short series with four parts in 1992-1993. After this, the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic series began in April 1993.
