Knuckles the Echidna (Japanese: ナックルズ・ザ・エキドゥナ, Hepburn: Nakkuruzu za Ekiduna) is a popular character from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He is a red echidna who looks like a person, and he is one of Sonic's best friends.

Knuckles is known for being strong and serious, but he can sometimes be tricked easily. He uses his powerful fists to punch enemies. His main job is to guard the Master Emerald, a giant jewel that controls the powerful Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles is also the last known member of his tribe, the Knuckles Clan.

Knuckles first appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 1994. In that game, Doctor Eggman tricked him into fighting Sonic and Tails. He became a playable hero later that year in Sonic & Knuckles. After realizing Eggman had tricked him, Knuckles teamed up with Sonic. Since then, he has been in many games, comics, and TV shows. He even appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie.

Knuckles is one of the most loved characters in the Sonic series. He appears in most of the games and spin-offs. You can also find him on lots of Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise.

Creating Knuckles

When the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was being made, the creators wanted a new rival for Sonic. They tried many different animal designs before choosing Knuckles. The idea was for him to be able to break through walls.

Knuckles was created by Takashi Yuda. He was first meant to be a "supporting character." He was introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as a powerful character. He then became a main playable character in the next game, Sonic & Knuckles.

Knuckles' Voice Actors

Many different actors have given Knuckles his voice over the years. In Japan, Nobutoshi Canna has been his main voice since 1998.

In English cartoons, Brian Drummond voiced him in Sonic Underground.

In the video games, Knuckles has had several voice actors. Scott Dreier voiced him from 2001 to 2004. Then, Dan Green took over from 2005 to 2010. After that, Travis Willingham voiced him until 2018. Since 2019, Dave B. Mitchell has been his voice.

In the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles is voiced by the famous actor Idris Elba. Elba will also voice Knuckles in a new TV show about him.

Knuckles' Personality and Powers

Knuckles is a fictional red echidna who acts like a human. He is the last known member of his echidna clan. For many years, his family guarded a huge gemstone called the Master Emerald. This emerald controls the powerful Chaos Emeralds in the Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Because of this, Knuckles has spent most of his life on a floating island called Angel Island. He guards the Master Emerald there. This has made him a bit quiet and reserved.

Knuckles is usually calm, but he can get angry easily. He sometimes gets into fights with other characters. He can also be a bit shy around girls. His favorite food is grapes.

At first, Knuckles was an enemy of Sonic. But later, they became good friends and partners. Knuckles sometimes feels a bit jealous of Sonic's exciting life. He can be easily fooled, especially by Doctor Robotnik, because he hasn't spent much time off Angel Island. However, he has learned to be more careful.

Knuckles is slower than Sonic, but he is one of the strongest characters. He is also a skilled martial artist. His strong body lets him lift very heavy objects. His powerful fists can smash rocks and break through the ground. He can also glide long distances and climb walls using the spikes on his gloves. Unlike Sonic, Knuckles can also swim.

Like other Sonic characters, Knuckles can roll into a ball to attack enemies. He also has a powerful "super" form. When he uses the Chaos Emeralds, he can turn into Super Knuckles. If he uses the even more powerful Super Emeralds, he can become Hyper Knuckles.

Knuckles' Adventures in Video Games

Knuckles first appeared in the 1994 Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In this game, he joined Dr. Robotnik because he was tricked into thinking Sonic was trying to steal the Master Emerald. Knuckles fought Sonic many times.

Robotnik's trick was revealed later in Sonic & Knuckles when he stole the Master Emerald and attacked Knuckles. Sonic & Knuckles was the first game where Knuckles was a playable character. His story happens after Sonic's. You could also play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 and 3 using a special "lock-on" feature.

In 1995, Knuckles starred in Knuckles' Chaotix for the Sega 32X. In this game, he guards an amusement park island. He rescues his friends, called the Chaotix, from Robotnik. He teams up with them, and they are tied together, which makes for unique gameplay.

In Sonic Adventure, Eggman breaks the Master Emerald, which frees a creature named Chaos. Knuckles has to find the scattered pieces to fix the Emerald and protect Angel Island. Eggman tricks Knuckles again, making him think Sonic is collecting the Emerald pieces for himself. Knuckles fights Sonic, but Eggman steals the pieces they were holding. Knuckles eventually helps Sonic and Tails defeat Chaos and restore the Emerald.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Knuckles and Rouge fight over the Master Emerald. Knuckles breaks it to stop Eggman from stealing it. He spends the game collecting the pieces again. He later helps Sonic and Tails stop Eggman's grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, from crashing a space station into Earth. Knuckles teams up with the other heroes to save the planet.

Knuckles is a strong character in Sonic Heroes alongside Sonic (speed) and Tails (flight). They work together to stop Eggman, who turns out to be Metal Sonic in disguise. Knuckles also helps Sonic and friends stop Eggman in the Sonic Advance games. He also appears in the Sonic Riders racing games.

In the role-playing game Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Knuckles is a main character. The game starts with him being kidnapped, and Sonic's team has to rescue him. It's revealed that other echidnas are still alive, including the helpful Shade the Echidna.

Knuckles has also appeared in many spin-off games. These include fighting games like Sonic the Fighters, racing games like Sonic R, and party games like Sonic Shuffle. He also appears in crossover games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Knuckles appears as an assist trophy that helps players.

Knuckles in Comics

In the Sonic the Comic series, Knuckles' role is similar to the games. When the Death Egg crashes on Angel Island, Dr. Robotnik tricks Knuckles. Knuckles helps Robotnik at first, but then he realizes the trick. He uses a special seventh Emerald to defeat Robotnik. After that, he becomes an ally against Robotnik.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series by Archie Comics, Knuckles is the eighteenth guardian of the Floating Island (Angel Island). He is also part of a secret society called the Brotherhood of Guardians. This group protects the island and is made up of Knuckles' ancestors.

Knuckles is supported by the Chaotix team in the comics. He often works with Sonic the Hedgehog and the Freedom Fighters. At first, Knuckles was the only defender of the island. But over time, his backstory grew. He was abandoned by his father as part of his training. He was tricked by Robotnik into fighting Sonic and Tails. After realizing the truth, he became good friends with Sonic.

Knuckles formed the Chaotix with friends like Vector the Crocodile and Espio the Chameleon. They would guard the island when he had to leave. Knuckles was also said to have a special destiny as "the Avatar." He was also childhood friends with Princess Sally Acorn.

Knuckles later found out that other echidnas were still alive. He met his great-uncle Dimitri, who became an evil being called Enerjak. He also met a cyborg army called the Dark Legion. One member, Julie-Su the Echidna, joined Knuckles and became his love interest. Knuckles discovered other echidna groups, including the city of Echidnaopolis.

Knuckles' early adventures usually involved protecting Angel Island. But Robotnik's attacks on the planet made Knuckles join the fight against him. One of his enemies, Dr. Finitevus, even turned Knuckles into a new Enerjak. Knuckles felt very guilty about his actions.

Later, most of the remaining echidnas were banished from their world. This was due to a lawsuit involving the comic's creator. After a major story event, the comic version of Knuckles became very similar to his video game version. He is the last known echidna and the last guardian of the Master Emerald. The Chaotix are no longer his full-time support team.

Knuckles in Cartoons and Movies

Knuckles first appeared in a Japanese cartoon called Sonic the Hedgehog in 1996. He met Sonic and Tails and helped them defeat robots created by Eggman. Knuckles also had some friendly fights with Sonic in the film.

Knuckles was a smaller character in Sonic Underground. Sonic and his siblings met Knuckles on Angel Island while looking for their mother. Knuckles helped them protect the island and the Chaos Emerald from villains. He later helped them control a powerful energy unleashed by a broken Emerald.

Knuckles appears in all three seasons of Sonic X. He takes guarding the Master Emerald very seriously and can have a quick temper. After being stranded in a new world with Sonic, he just wanted to go home. He often traveled alone but later joined Sonic and his friends more often.

Knuckles is a main character in the Sonic Boom cartoon series. He was redesigned to be taller and more muscular. In this show, Knuckles is often shown as a bit silly and not very smart, which is a funny take on his game personality.

Knuckles also appears as a supporting character in Sonic Prime. When Sonic breaks a special prism, it creates many parallel dimensions. Different versions of Knuckles appear in these dimensions, like Renegade Knucks and the pirate captain Knuckles the Dread.

Knuckles in Other Media

Knuckles was not in the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie. However, his species, the echidnas, were shown in the movie's opening scene. They attacked a young Sonic and his caretaker. The movie's writer hinted that a connection between this echidna tribe and Knuckles could be explored later.

Knuckles appears in the second film, voiced by Idris Elba. In the movie, he is the last of his echidna tribe. He holds a grudge against Sonic because Sonic's caretaker was an owl, and the echidnas and owls had a war. He teams up with Dr. Robotnik to find the Master Emerald.

Robotnik betrays Knuckles, but Sonic rescues him. Knuckles then teams up with Sonic and Tails to defeat Robotnik. They reclaim the Master Emerald. The three friends agree to guard the Emerald together while living with Sonic's adoptive family.

Knuckles is also set to be the main character of a spin-off TV series on Paramount+, with Idris Elba returning to voice him.
