Souboz was a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the French-speaking part of the Bern canton, called the Bernese Jura. On January 1, 2015, Souboz joined with three other towns – Châtelat, Monible, and Sornetan – to create a new, bigger town called Petit-Val.

A Look at Souboz's Past

Souboz was first written about in the year 1398. Back then, it was known as Subol.

Early History and Changes

For a long time, Souboz was owned by a group of church leaders called canons. They were part of the Moutier-Grandval Abbey. This abbey was under the rule of the Prince-Bishop of Basel. A Prince-Bishop was a powerful church leader who also ruled a territory.

During the time of the Protestant Reformation, many people changed their religion. Souboz also accepted the new Protestant faith. It then became part of the church area of Moutier.

French Rule and Return to Switzerland

In 1797, France won a war and took control of Souboz. The town became part of a French region called Mont-Terrible. Three years later, it moved to another French region, Haut-Rhin.

After Napoleon's defeat, the leaders of Europe met. In 1815, they decided that Souboz would become part of the Canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Modern Times and Economy

In the early 1900s, Souboz had money problems. From 1926 to 1937, the mayor of Moutier helped manage Souboz. This helped the town get out of debt.
