Soumagne's Past: A Look at History
From the late 1800s until the 1960s, Soumagne was a busy and successful town. It had many coal mines. There was also a large factory called a Cooperative.
After coal mining stopped, the old mine sites were cleaned up. New homes and shops were built there. Some old buildings were saved and turned into places for tourists. An example is "le domaine du Bas-Bois."
World War I Impact
During World War I, in 1914, the German army invaded Belgium. In Soumagne, many people lost their lives. About 100 houses were also burned. This happened because the Belgian army resisted the invasion from a nearby fort.
Soumagne's Comeback
Since 1980, more people have moved to Soumagne. They came from bigger cities like Liège and Verviers. The E40 motorway also passes through the area. This helped Soumagne recover after the coal mines closed.
During this time, many new houses were built. A lot of young families moved to Soumagne. Many new shops and shopping centers opened. Small businesses also started to grow in the town.
