A Look at South Hurstville's Past
Long ago, in 1808, the land where South Hurstville is today was given to two brothers, Captain John Townson and Robert Townson. Captain Townson received a large piece of land, about 1950 acres (around 7.9 square kilometers). His brother Robert also received land nearby.
However, the Townson brothers were not happy with the land. It was covered in thick trees and not good for raising sheep. Because of this, they probably never lived on their land.
From Lord's Bush to Gannon's Forest
In 1812, a rich merchant named Simeon Lord bought the land. He called his new property Lord's Bush. After Simeon Lord passed away, the land was owned by the Bank of New South Wales for a while.
Later, in 1850, a man named Michael Gannon bought the land. It then became known as Gannon's Forest. The first post office in Gannon's Forest opened in 1881.
How Hurstville Got Its Name
In 1876, a school inspector named MacIntyre called the local school "Hurstville". When the railway line arrived in 1884, the train station was also named "Hurstville" after the school. The Hurstville area officially became a municipality (a local government area) in 1887.

South Hurstville is mostly a place where people live, but it also has a small shopping area. You'll find a traditional row of shops along King Georges Road and Connells Point Road. The Kings Head Tavern is a well-known building in this spot.
Nearby, you can find an IGA Supa supermarket for groceries, a McDonald's for fast food, and a BWS Liquor store. There's also a small area with light industrial businesses on lower Halstead Street.
