Exploring South Jacksonville's Location
South Jacksonville is found in the middle of Morgan County. It shares a border to the north with the city of Jacksonville. Jacksonville is the main city, or county seat, of Morgan County.
Roads and Travel
Illinois Route 267 (Main Street) runs right through the center of the village. This road goes north about 2 miles (3 km) to downtown Jacksonville. It also goes south about 6 miles (10 km) to Woodson.
The Interstate 72 and U.S. Route 36 freeway is on the southern edge of the village. You can get onto this freeway from Exit 64, which is on IL 267. I-72/US-36 goes east about 35 miles (56 km) to Springfield, which is the state capital. It goes west about 64 miles (103 km) to Hannibal, Missouri.
Land and Water Features
The U.S. Census Bureau says that South Jacksonville covers about 2.32 square miles (6.02 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.05 square miles (0.14 square kilometers), is water.
Mauvaise Terre Creek flows north through the eastern side of the village. This creek also goes through Mauvaise Terre Lake, which is a reservoir. The creek eventually flows into the Illinois River.

Prairie Land Heritage Museum
The Prairie Land Heritage Museum is like an open-air museum. It shows how farming used to be done in the past. You can see old farm machines and learn about traditional farming methods.
One special thing at the museum is the George Waters Memorial Railroad. This is a narrow gauge train that runs on a track that is 2 feet wide. It is powered by a real steam locomotive. This train was built by a company called Crown Metal Products.
