What Happens in Space Buddies?
The Puppies' Big Adventure Begins
The movie starts with Buddha, a golden retriever puppy, and his owner, Sam, watching the stars. Sam makes a wish that he could touch the moon. The next day, Sam has a school trip to Vision Enterprises. They are going to watch a test launch of the Vision 1 spacecraft.
Sam has to leave Buddha at home because pets are not allowed. But Buddha meets up with his siblings: Rosebud, Budderball, B-Dawg, and Mudbud. He invites them to come see the rocket launch with him. The puppies decide to sneak onto the school bus.
When they arrive at Vision Enterprises, the dogs find a machine that makes space suits. They put on the suits and follow the students. Dr. Finkel is leading the students on the tour. The dogs then manage to get inside the Vision 1 space shuttle.
Accidental Launch into Space
At Mission Control, the team gets ready for launch. The dogs are exploring the shuttle when they get sealed inside. The shuttle is now ready to take off! Astro, who is piloting the shuttle from Earth, launches it. The Vision 1 flies into space with the puppies on board.
Back at Mission Control, the humans realize there's a big problem. The third fuel tank in the shuttle was never filled! They have only ten hours before the fuel runs out. The team quickly looks for a solution. They decide to guide the spacecraft to an old Russian space station.
Meeting Yuri and Spudnik
They contact the cosmonaut (a Russian astronaut) living on the space station. His name is Yuri. They tell him to refuel the Vision 1. When Vision 1 connects to the space station, the dogs decide to explore. They meet another dog named Spudnik, who lives with Yuri.
Spudnik explains that Yuri is happy living in space, but he also misses Earth. Yuri finds the puppies and is very happy to have company. He traps the buddies in the kitchen, but Spudnik helps them escape.
A Dangerous Escape
Yuri connects the fuel hose to the Vision 1. But then, the fuel starts to leak! The buddies and Spudnik rush back to the Vision 1 to escape. Yuri tries to stop them by activating a lock-down. However, the dogs manage to get into the Vision 1.
Yuri tries to stop them, hitting the control switches. Sparks fall onto the leaking fuel, causing an explosion! The dogs escape from the space station just as it blows up. Yuri barely escapes in his own small escape vessel, called the Cosmopod.
Landing on the Moon
The Vision 1 continues its journey towards the moon. Soon, the spacecraft lands on the moon! (Before this, B-Dawg thought the moon was the "Death Star"). The puppies get out of the Vision 1 and walk around the moon's surface.
At Mission Control, the humans hear soft barks from the puppies' helmets. They realize that golden retriever puppies are on board! This news is broadcast on TV. The children back on Earth find out about the puppies' accidental space trip.
While on the moon, the dogs meet a ferret named Gravity. She is their mission control assistant. The puppies can only hear her voice, so they don't know she's a ferret. She tells them to get back into the Vision 1.
The Journey Back to Earth
On the way back to Earth, Dr. Finkel secretly changes the ship's path. This new path leads them into a meteor shower! The Vision 1's "auto-avoidance system" takes over. The ship moves wildly to dodge the meteors.
But then, a meteor hits the Vision 1's data antenna, breaking it. Budderball has to go outside the ship on a space walk to fix the antenna. At Mission Control, the adults are confused about the ship's new course. Sam accuses Dr. Finkel of changing the path.
Dr. Finkel denies it, but Pi uses a security camera to prove he was at the desk when the path changed. Dr. Finkel is taken away by security. Sam calls him "Dr. Stinkel."
Heroic Return and Awards
Mission Control receives Yuri's distress signal from his Cosmopod. The Vision 1 then enters Earth's atmosphere. They wait for the ship to arrive, and it lands safely. The dogs discover that Gravity is a ferret. They also learn that Budderball is related to skunks! Yuri crashes his pod but is rescued by soldiers. He tells them he came from space.
Pi gives the dogs special wings for their bravery, calling them "Space Buddies." Back home, Buddha gives Sam a moon rock he brought back. This makes Sam's wish of touching the moon come true. The movie ends with Spudnik back home with his owner, Sasha. He says, "It is the journey and friendship that matters the most."
