Meet the Space Sentinels
How the Heroes Got Their Powers
Many centuries ago, three young people from Earth were chosen for a special mission. They were taken to another planet. There, they were given amazing eternal youth and incredible superpowers.
After their training, they returned to Earth. Their big task was to protect our planet and everything around it. Think of them like a special space police force! Two of the heroes, Hercules and Mercury, were so strong and fast that they became the inspiration for ancient Roman myths. The third hero is Astrea, named after a Greek goddess, but with different powers.
Their Secret Base and How They Travel
The Space Sentinels live and work in a secret spaceship. This ship is hidden inside a sleeping volcano! They are watched over by Sentinel One, also known as S-1. S-1 is a super smart computer. It helps command and guide the Sentinel teams.
When they have a mission on Earth, the team launches from vertical tubes. They fly to their destination using special rocket belts built into their suits. These belts let them travel super fast, even across continents. Mercury can fly even faster than that! For missions far away in space, Sentinel One transports them in their spaceship. This ship can travel faster than the speed of light!
The Heroes and Their Friends
Main Sentinel Team Members
- Hercules: This hero has blond hair and blue eyes. He has amazing superhuman strength. Hercules loves to exercise and eat healthy food. His voice was done by George DiCenzo. George also voiced Sentinel One and later played Hercules again in another cartoon called The Freedom Force.
- Mercury: Mercury can run and fly incredibly fast, almost as fast as light! He is Chinese and enjoys practicing martial arts. Mercury is often the team's jokester. Even though he can fly, he sometimes prefers to run super fast on the ground. Evan Kim was his voice actor.
- Astrea: Astrea has a unique power: she can change into any Earth animal! She is usually the leader when the team is out on a mission. Astrea was one of the very few black superheroes in cartoons back then. Dee Timberlake provided her voice.
Their Helpful Allies
- Sentinel One (S-1): Nicknamed S-1, this is a smart supercomputer built into the spaceship. S-1 watches all situations, warns the team about dangers, and gives them advice. It talks to them as a large, holographic head that appears inside the ship. Other Sentinel computers include Sentinel Seven (who sounds like a female) and the Prime Sentinel, the main commander.
- MO (Maintenance Operator): "Moe" is a small, boxy service robot. His job is to keep Sentinel One and the spaceship working perfectly. He's a bit like R2-D2 from Star Wars, but he talks in everyday American English. MO looks a bit like the robots from the movie Silent Running. He was voiced by Lou Scheimer, one of the creators of Filmation. MO is very fond of Astrea and often provides the comic relief in the show.
