Driving to Spofford
The city is on the east side of Texas State Highway 131. This highway goes north about 10 miles (16 km) to Brackettville, which is the main town of the county. If you go south about 24 miles (39 km), you'll reach U.S. Route 277 near the Rio Grande river.

Spofford's Past: A Railroad Town
Spofford got its name from C.K. Spofford. He opened a hotel there in 1882, soon after the railroad arrived. The town grew around his hotel.
Early Growth
A post office was set up in Spofford in 1884. By 1896, the town had its first school. By 1900, about 100 people lived in Spofford.
The Railroad's Importance
The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad chose Spofford over Brackettville for an important reason. They built a side track from Spofford to Eagle Pass. The main railroad line then continued west to Langtry.
For a while, Spofford was a stop on the Sunset Limited train route. Today, the Amtrak Sunset Limited still passes through Spofford on the same tracks. However, it no longer stops in the city. The closest stop is about 30 miles (48 km) northwest in Del Rio.
Population Changes Over Time
Spofford's population reached its highest point in the mid-1940s, with 373 people. After schools in the area combined in the 1940s, Spofford's students started taking buses to Brackettville. By 1961, the population had dropped to 138. It went as low as 54 people in the mid-1970s.
