Spyglass Media Group, LLC is an American company that makes movies and TV shows. It was started by Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum in 1998. The company was first known as Spyglass Entertainment.

History

Spyglass Entertainment: The Early Years

On August 21, 1998, Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum created Spyglass Entertainment. Gary Barber used to work at Morgan Creek Productions. Roger Birnbaum was a co-founder of Caravan Pictures.

Their new company made a deal with Walt Disney Studios. Disney helped them by distributing their movies. Disney also invested money in the new company.

Spyglass Entertainment worked from the Disney lot in Burbank. Disney also gave them an early payment of $10 million to $20 million. This helped Spyglass get started with its first movies.

First Big Successes

In October 1998, some European companies also invested in Spyglass. These companies bought the rights to show Spyglass movies in countries like Germany and Italy.

One of Spyglass's first big hits was The Sixth Sense (1999). This movie made $661 million around the world. It was a huge success for the new company.

By 2000, Disney owned 10% of Spyglass. Other companies from Scandinavia and Portugal also invested. In 2003, Spyglass made a deal with Village Roadshow. This company would distribute Spyglass movies in Australia, New Zealand, and Greece.

Expanding to TV and New Deals

In 2002, Spyglass Entertainment started a TV division. They wanted to create shows for television. One of their projects was the TV series Miracles.

In 2003, Spyglass ended its deal with Disney. They then tried to work with DreamWorks. However, this deal did not work out well. So, Spyglass made a similar deal with Sony Pictures instead. Spyglass moved its offices to Westwood, Los Angeles.

In 2010, a company called Cerberus Capital Management bought Spyglass. Later that year, Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum became leaders at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). They had planned to add Spyglass's old movies to MGM's collection, but this did not happen.

Spyglass Media Group: The Relaunch

On March 13, 2019, Gary Barber and Lantern Entertainment brought the company back. They renamed it Spyglass Media Group. Other companies like Eagle Pictures and Cineworld also invested.

Lantern Entertainment became the main owner. They also gave Spyglass their collection of movies. Gary Barber kept the Spyglass name and the rights to make sequels or remakes of old Spyglass movies. The company plans to make content for all types of platforms.

New Leadership and Projects

In April 2019, Lauren Whitney became the president of television for Spyglass. Damien Marin joined as president of worldwide distribution in September 2019.

Warner Bros. also bought a part of Spyglass in April 2019. They made a deal to look at Spyglass's new projects first.

Spyglass Media Group started working on new movies and shows. One of their first new projects was a movie for the Hellraiser series. They also got the rights to Stephen King's book The Institute. They plan to turn it into a mini-series.

In 2021, Lionsgate bought 200 movies from The Weinstein Company's library. These movies were owned by Spyglass. Lionsgate also bought a part of Spyglass.
