A Look Back: History of St. Anthony West
This old neighborhood started way back in 1849. It was first known as the Village of Saint Anthony Falls, built right next to the Mississippi River.
The famous Saint Anthony Falls were first seen by a European in 1680. This was Father Louis Hennepin, a Franciscan priest. He was the first European to explore this area, which is now Minneapolis. He named the falls after his special saint, St. Anthony of Padua.
Later, in 1872, the Village of Saint Anthony Falls joined with the growing city of Minneapolis.
Where is St. Anthony West?
This neighborhood is super close to downtown Minneapolis. It's also just a short walk from the University of Minnesota.
St. Anthony West is home to Boom Island Park, a large park right by the river. This park covers about 14 acres (about 56,656 square meters).
The neighborhood has clear boundaries:
- Broadway Street NE is its northern edge.
- It goes down to Second Avenue on the south.
- The Mississippi River forms its western side.
- Washington and Fifth streets NE mark its eastern boundary.
Saint Anthony West is part of a local government area called Ward 3. The person who represents this area on the Minneapolis City Council is currently Michael Rainville.
Growing and Changing: New Developments
Even though St. Anthony West is one of Minneapolis's oldest neighborhoods, it's changing a lot. Many new buildings are being added along the river. Builders have found that Northeast Minneapolis is a great spot for new, fancy homes and businesses.
To make sure there's still green space, people living in St. Anthony West worked together in 2004. They made a deal with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. This plan helped turn a 12-acre (about 48,562 square meters) area called the B.F. Nelson site into a public park. This new park is right along the Mississippi riverfront.
Saint Anthony West is also where the main office for Graco Inc. is located. Graco Inc. is a company that makes systems and parts for moving liquids.
Getting Involved: Neighborhood Groups
The Saint Anthony West Neighborhood Organization (STAWNO) is a special group for people who live in the neighborhood. It helps residents get involved in local decisions. They hold meetings every month, and anyone can come!
