St. Charles, also known as Saint Charles, is a small city. It is located in southern Bear Lake County, Idaho, in the United States. The city sits close to the northwestern shore of Bear Lake. In 2010, 131 people lived there. This was a bit less than the 156 people counted in 2000.

What St. Charles is Like
St. Charles is a quiet place. Ranching is important here. Many people also visit for fun activities. The city has a small number of homes. They are spread out on rustic streets. You can also see fields and farm buildings.
Some people have built summer homes here. They come to enjoy the lake. St. Charles is at the start of St. Charles Canyon. This is a beautiful area in the nearby mountains. You can go hiking and camping there.
History of St. Charles
Early Settlement and Territory Changes
St. Charles was first settled in May 1864. Mormon pioneers were the first to live there. At first, these settlers thought they were in the Utah Territory. In 1864, Utah's government created Richland County. This county was for the towns in the Bear Lake Valley. St. Charles was chosen as its main town, called the county seat.
In 1870, a count of people showed St. Charles and other towns in Idaho's Bear Lake Valley were listed under Rich County, Utah. But on February 15, 1872, a new survey was finished. This survey drew the official line between Idaho and Utah. It showed that St. Charles and the other northern Bear Lake Valley towns were actually in Oneida County, Idaho Territory.
Growth and Changes Over Time
The area grew as a farming community. The number of people living there was never very large. In the 1900s, St. Charles started to attract tourists. People came looking for a fun place to visit. Some second homes and retirement homes have been built. However, the total number of people living in St. Charles has gone down.
Famous People from St. Charles
Gutzon Borglum (1867–1941) was a famous sculptor. He was born in St. Charles. His parents were immigrants from Denmark. He is best known for carving the faces of American presidents. These huge sculptures are on Mount Rushmore.
