Hospital History
A group of sisters called the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia started St. Elizabeth Hospital. This happened on August 24, 1897. A church leader named Archbishop William H. Gross had asked them to open it. Only three sisters worked at the hospital at first. It was located in the old St. Francis Academy building. This building was at the corner of Second and Church streets.
The hospital helped many people, including local gold miners. They offered a special plan to the miners. Miners could pay one dollar each month to the hospital. In return, they received all their health care services. This made St. Elizabeth Hospital one of the first health plans like this in the country.
In 1912, work began on a new, bigger hospital building. It had 115 beds and was finished in 1915. During the 1918 Spanish flu outbreak, many people with the flu were treated at the hospital. The sisters also went to people's homes to care for them.
