The Hospital's History
The St. Elizabeth Hospital first opened on August 24, 1897. It was started by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. This was done at the request of Archbishop William H. Gross. Only three sisters ran the hospital at the start. It was located in the former St. Francis Academy building.
One important group that St. Elizabeth Hospital helped was the local gold miners. The hospital offered a special kind of health insurance to them. Miners paid one dollar each month. In return, they received all the healthcare services they needed. This made St. Elizabeth Hospital one of the first groups to offer this type of health plan in the country.
In 1912, work began on a new, bigger hospital building. This new facility had 115 beds and was finished in 1915. During the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic, many people with the flu were treated at the hospital. The sisters also went to people's homes to care for them.
