History of St. Francis: From Nojoshing to City Status
The area where St. Francis is now was once called "Nojoshing" by the Native Americans who lived there. This was before the first European settlers arrived. In 1845, a very important school, the St. Francis Seminary, was built here. Later, in the mid-1800s, a group of religious women called the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi also made their home in the area.
Becoming a City: Why St. Francis Incorporated
Historically, St. Francis was part of a larger area known as the Town of Lake. Over time, big parts of the Town of Lake were becoming part of the city of Milwaukee. People living in the St. Francis area wanted to stop this from happening to their community. They wanted to become their own city.
The idea of St. Francis becoming its own city started as early as the 1920s. However, other residents in the Town of Lake didn't always agree with this plan. Finally, on July 24, 1951, the people of St. Francis voted to become an official city. The results were confirmed the very next day. A few years later, in 1954, the rest of the Town of Lake became part of Milwaukee.
How St. Francis Got Its Name
The city of St. Francis was named after the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary. This seminary was founded by Archbishop John Henni, who was the first Archbishop of Milwaukee. He named the seminary after Francis de Sales, a very important Catholic bishop from Switzerland.
