St. Louis is a small town in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2020, the census counted 121 people living there.
Town History
St. Louis started in 1906. It was first called Simpsonville. A man named J. R. Simpson opened a cotton gin and a general store. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
It is not clear when the name changed to St. Louis. The town officially recorded its layout in 1927. A post office opened there in 1928.
For a short time in the 1920s, the town had an "oil boom." This means a lot of oil was found and produced there. But most of the time, the town's economy depended on helping local cotton farmers.
The number of people living in St. Louis was highest in 1930, with 493 residents. After that, the population went down for many years. It grew back to 206 people in 2000. However, it has become smaller again in recent times.
Location and Area
St. Louis is located in Oklahoma. It is southwest of a city called Seminole. You can find it along Oklahoma State Highway 59. The town is also northwest of Lake Konawa.
The United States Census Bureau says the town covers about 9.4 square miles (24.45 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There is no water within the town's official borders.
