St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral is an important Catholic cathedral located in Billings, Montana, in the United States. It serves as one of two main churches, called cathedrals, for the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings. The other main church is St. Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls, Montana.

History of St. Patrick's

Early Days of the Parish

The first Catholic church in Billings was called St. Joachim. It was started in 1887. As the city of Billings grew, people needed a bigger church. So, St. Patrick's was built. The church building you see today was finished in 1904. It was designed in the Gothic Revival style, which looks like old European cathedrals. Building it cost about $64,000 back then.

Changes and Updates Over Time

The church has been updated several times. In 1954, a big renovation happened. Many parts of the church were replaced, like the altar and pews. A beautiful new rose window was added above the choir area. The inside of the church was also painted with designs that looked like Byzantine art. The outside of the church got some updates too.

More changes were made in the 1960s and 1970s. These updates were done because of new rules from the Second Vatican Council. Some parts, like the side altars, were removed. A new marble altar and a special stand for readings, called an ambo, were put in. New wood panels were also added to the walls.

Becoming a Co-Cathedral

On February 14, 1980, Pope John Paul II made an important decision. He changed the name of the Diocese of Great Falls to the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings. At that time, St. Patrick's Church became a co-cathedral. This means it shares the role of the main church with St. Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls.

More renovations happened in the 1990s. The choir area was moved closer to the front of the church. New rooms for the priests, called sacristies, were built. A new gathering space was also added for people to meet before or after services.
