St George's Anglican Church is a special church in Madrid, Spain. People also call it the 'British Chapel' (Capilla Británica). It is an Anglican church, which is a type of Christian church connected to the Church of England. This church is located in the Recoletos area of Madrid. It was built in 1923 and officially opened in March 1925.

The Story of St George's Church

The church's story began in 1864. An Anglican chaplain named Reverend William Campbell started holding church services. He held them in a small room in a private house in Madrid. Later, the British and Foreign Bible Society provided a bigger space.

In 1900, an old coach house at the British Embassy was turned into a church. Funds were raised from a gift by Mr. Edgar Allen and donations from English-speaking people. This allowed the building of the current church to begin in 1923.

The Spanish architect Teodoro de Anasagasti [es] designed the church. He mixed traditional Spanish styles, like Spanish Romanesque and Mudéjar, with Anglican church designs. The church was officially opened in 1925. Since then, it has become a home for an international community. People from about 26 different countries attend services there.

Church Design and Features

St George's Church is built on a rectangular piece of land. A small garden separates it from the street. The architect, Teodoro de Anasagasti, blended Spanish and Anglican styles. For example, he used Spanish Romanesque and Mudéjar styles. He also included Anglican features like the porch and the chancel.

The church has a single main hall, called a nave. It also has a transept (a part that crosses the nave). At the end is the chancel, where the altar is located on a raised platform. To the left of the chancel is a sacristy, which is a room where priests prepare. Next to the sacristy stands a tower built in the Mudéjar style.

The church has beautiful stained-glass windows.

In the chancel, windows show Saint George (patron saint of England), Saint James the Great (patron saint of Spain), Saint John, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul.
In the nave, windows show Saint David of Wales, Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland), Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), and Saint Francis of Assisi.
In the north choir, there are windows of Saint Cecilia and Saint Anthony Abbot.
The porch has windows showing the birth of Jesus.
