St Giles' Church in Cropwell Bishop is a historic church in England. It's part of the Church of England, which is the main Christian church in England. This beautiful building is very old and important. It has been given a special "Grade I listed" status. This means it's considered an outstanding example of architecture and history.

History of St Giles' Church

This church has parts that are very old, going back to the 13th century. Most of the church you see today was built in the 14th century. Imagine how many people have visited this church over hundreds of years!

What the Church Looks Like

St Giles' Church has several main parts. It has a central area called the nave. On either side of the nave are the north and south aisles. There is also a south porch where people enter. The chancel is the part of the church near the altar.

The Church Tower and Bells

The church also has a tall tower. This tower was built around the year 1450. Inside the tower, there are six bells. These bells have been added or changed over many years:

  • One bell is from the 16th century.
  • Two bells are from 1669 and 1757.
  • A fourth bell was remade in 1905.
  • A fifth bell was added in the same year, 1905.
  • The newest bell, called the treble bell, was put in place in 1981.

The Old Church Clock

For over 200 years, from 1694 to 1906, St Giles' Church had a special clock. This clock was made by a famous clockmaker named Richard Roe. You can't see the clock at the church anymore. It is now kept safe and displayed at the Nottingham Industrial Museum.
