A Look Back: Church History
Building the First Church
People in Deritend built their first church in 1380. Before this, they had to travel three miles to Aston Parish Church. Building their own chapel made it much easier for villagers to worship.
A Famous Worshipper
The church was known as the place where John Rogers worshipped. He was the first English Protestant martyr under Queen Mary I. A martyr is someone who dies for their beliefs.
Rebuilding and Demolition
The church was rebuilt in 1735, making it newer and stronger. A tall tower was added in 1762. In 1939, St John's Church joined with St Basil's Church, Deritend. St Basil's then became the main church for both areas. St John's Church was taken down in 1947. A special statue called a calvary, which was a memorial for the First World War, was moved to St Gabriel's Church, Weoley Castle.
Church Bells
In 1776, eight bells were made for the church by Robert Wells. Later, these bells were removed and melted down. They were then recast into a new set of bells. These new bells were first put in the Bishop Latimer Memorial Church, Winson Green. In 1972, they were moved again to St John's Church, Perry Barr.
The Church Organ
In 1906, St John's Church received an organ that had been built in 1822. This organ came from St Martin in the Bull Ring, another church in Birmingham. Walter James Bird was the person who installed the organ in St John's.
