History of the Cathedral
Building the Church
This beautiful church is located on Unthank Road in Norwich. It was built between 1882 and 1910. The church was designed by George Gilbert Scott, Jr.. It was first built as a regular parish church. It was dedicated to John the Baptist. The church was built on the spot where the Norwich City Gaol (an old prison) used to be.
Who Paid for It?
The money for building the church came from Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk. He paid for it as a way to say thank you. This was after his first marriage to Lady Flora Abney-Hastings.
Becoming a Cathedral
In 1976, the church became a cathedral. It was made the main church for the new Diocese of East Anglia. It also became the official home for the Bishop of East Anglia. In 2014, a special church service called a Pontifical High Mass was held here. This was the first time since 1558 that such a service took place in this cathedral.
Norwich's Two Cathedrals
Norwich is special because it has two cathedrals. The other one is the Church of England Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity. That cathedral was started in 1096. It was built in the Norman style.
