St John the Evangelist's Church is a lovely church in the small village of Osmotherley, which is in Cumbria, England. It's an active Anglican church, meaning it's still used for services and community events today. It's part of the Church of England and is connected with another church, St Mary with Holy Trinity in Ulverston. This church is also a special listed building (Grade II), which means it's an important historical site that needs to be protected.

History of the Church

When St John's Church Was Built

St John's Church was built a long time ago, between 1873 and 1874. It was designed by a well-known team of architects from Lancaster called Paley and Austin. They were famous for designing many beautiful buildings.

Building Costs and Capacity

The church was designed to hold about 150 people. Building it cost around £1,400 back then. That was a lot of money in the 1870s! It shows how important the church was to the community.

Church Design and Materials

What the Church Is Made Of

St John's Church is built using strong, dark grey slate stones. Lighter sandstone is used for decorative parts, like around the windows. The roofs are also covered with slate tiles, which helps keep the building safe from the weather.

Inside and Outside Features

The church has a main hall called a nave and a special area at the east end called a chancel. These two parts are connected in one long section. There's a wooden porch on the north side where people enter. On the south side, there's a small room called a vestry.

Windows and Bell Tower

All the windows in the church are tall and narrow, known as lancet windows. However, the vestry has two square-shaped windows. At the very west end of the church, there's a beautiful rose window above two lancet windows. The church also has a small bell tower, called a bellcote, with a tiny spire on top. This bellcote is made of wood and covered with slate.
