The School's Story: How it Began
St Laurence School started in 1980. It was created when two older schools joined together. These were Fitzmaurice Grammar School and Trinity Secondary Modern school. The new school opened on the site where Trinity school used to be. The school is named after the important Saxon St Laurence's Church, Bradford-on-Avon in the town.
From 1997 to 2010, St Laurence School was known as an Arts College. This special status meant the school received extra money. This money helped improve its facilities for drama, music, and dance.
The school has many different buildings for its teaching. There is also a large sports hall and several outdoor sports areas. A lecture theatre was built in 2007. In 2011, a modern learning centre was added for students to study on their own.
In 2005, something fun happened! A helium balloon was launched at a school fair. It was later found in Karesuando, Sweden. That's about 1,430 miles (2,300 km) away from the school! The person who found it received a prize.
Music and Learning at the Wiltshire Music Centre
The Wiltshire Music Centre opened in 1998. It is a special building on the school grounds. Students can take music lessons here. The main hall is used for school events, like assemblies and award ceremonies. The Music Centre also has a recording studio. This is where music can be professionally recorded.
Discovering Ancient Roman History
In 1976, pictures from above showed something interesting under the school's sports fields. It looked like there might be the remains of a Roman villa there. A small dig confirmed this idea.
In 2003, a bigger excavation took place. Workers found Roman era floor mosaics and old walls. These were once part of the villa. They also found a stone structure. Experts believe it might have been an early Christian baptistery. A baptistery is a place where people were baptized.
Student Success and School Size
In 2016, many students at St Laurence School did very well in their GCSE exams. About 79% of students achieved good grades in English and Mathematics. Currently, there are 1,358 students attending the school. These students are in different age groups, from age 11 up to 18.
