How St Laurence School Started
St Laurence School started in 1980. It was formed when two older schools, Fitzmaurice Grammar School and Trinity Secondary Modern, joined together. The school is named after the very old St Laurence's Church in Bradford on Avon. This church is famous for its Saxon history.
From 1997 to 2010, the school was known as an "Arts College." This special status meant it received extra money. This money helped improve its drama, music, and dance facilities.
School Buildings and Facilities
The school has many different buildings for its teaching departments. There's also a large sports hall where students can play games. Outside, you'll find several sports courts, pitches, and playing fields. In 2007, a lecture theatre was built. A modern learning centre was added in 2011. This centre helps students study on their own.
In October 2005, something interesting happened. A helium balloon launched at a school fair on September 24, 2005, was found far away in Karesuando, Sweden. Karesuando is about 1,430 miles from the school! The person who found it received information about the school and a prize.
Wiltshire Music Centre
The Wiltshire Music Centre opened in 1998. It's a special building on the school site. Music lessons, both private and part of the school's curriculum, are held here. The main hall in the Music Centre is used for school assemblies, exam presentations, and other important events. There's even a recording studio inside!
Discovering Roman History
In 1976, pictures taken from the sky and small digs showed that there might be Roman villa remains under the school's sports fields. In 2003, a bigger excavation took place. During this dig, they found Roman era floor mosaics and walls. These were once part of the villa. They also found a stone structure that might have been an early Christian baptistery.
Student Achievements
In 2016, 79% of the school's GCSE students achieved good grades. This included grades A* to C in both English and Mathematics. Currently, there are 1,358 students attending the school. They range from key stages 3 to 5, which means students from age 11 up to 18.
