History of St. John's Church
Building the Church
The first stone for St. John's Church was placed on July 22, 1905. This important event was done by Samuel Forde Ridley, who was a Member of Parliament (MP) at the time.
The church was designed by a talented architect named C. H. B. Quennell. His wife helped by painting pictures for the pulpit, which is where the priest gives sermons. Albert Monk was the builder, and Paul Woodroffe created the beautiful stained glass windows. You can find a special plaque at the church that shares all these details.
St. John's Church Today
Reopening and Restoration
In 2004, the church building had to close. But the people who went to the church, called the congregation, really wanted to stay. With help from a priest named Fr Nigel Asbridge, they were able to move back into the church in September 2010.
Work to fix up St. John's Church was finished, and in July 2012, Peter Wheatley, who was the Bishop of Edmonton, came to officially reopen the church. Parts of the church, like the main area (nave), the altar area (chancel), the Lady Chapel, and the Sunday School room, were all made to look new again.
New Community Facilities
The western part of the church was changed to create new spaces for the Hanlon Centre. Also in July 2012, Prince Andrew visited to officially open the new Hanlon Centre and the St Matthew's School Annex.
St Matthew's CofE Primary School now uses a small hall at the church as an annex. More work was done to turn the large church hall into a school hall, dining room, and kitchens. Extra classrooms were also added in the vicarage garden. This shows how the church building is used for both worship and community activities.
