Where is St Paul's Church?
St Paul's Church is located on a hilltop in Hamstead. This area is part of Birmingham. The church is near the A34 Walsall Road. Hamstead used to be a village where people worked in mining.
When the church was first built, this area was part of Staffordshire. Later, in 1928, it became part of Birmingham. The church also has a community hall. This hall is just a short walk south along the A34 road.
The History of St Paul's Church
St Paul's Church started as a smaller "mission church" in 1865. It was closer to Hamstead village back then. People eventually raised enough money to build a bigger, permanent church.
Building the Church
The first stone for the new church was laid on July 27, 1891. A person named Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, 6th Baron Calthorpe helped with this important event. The church was designed by an architect named William Davis. It was built with red bricks and special stone called Bathstone.
The church was finished in 1892. It was officially opened on September 29, 1892, by the Bishop of Lichfield, Augustus Legge. Experts have described the church as a "pleasant country church" with a "Decorated" style.
Becoming a Parish Church
In 1894, St Paul's became a parish church. This meant it had its own area, or "parish," to serve. Land for this new parish was taken from two other church areas: St Mary's Church, Handsworth and St John the Evangelist's Church, Perry Barr.
Hamstead War Memorial
Next to St Paul's Church, there is a special memorial called the Hamstead War Memorial. It was put there in December 1920. This memorial remembers 22 men from the parish who died in World War I. The memorial looks like a Celtic wheel-cross. It is also a "Grade II listed" structure, just like the church.
