Stamford is located in the eastern part of Delaware County, New York. Its northeastern border touches Schoharie County. The town was first created in 1792. Later, in 1797, it became part of the new Delaware County. Stamford's boundaries have changed a few times over the years, reaching its current shape in 1834.
The town covers about 48.6 square miles (125.9 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The West Branch Delaware River flows along the northern edge of the town.
