A Look Back: Stanhope's History
Stanhope was first planned out in 1883. It might have been named after Lady Hester Stanhope. She was a British traveler and writer. Another idea is that it was named after an official. This person worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. The city officially became a city on December 14, 1897.
