Stansbury's Story
The town was first called Oyster Bay. In 1873, it was officially named Stansbury. This name was chosen by Governor Anthony Musgrave. He named it to honor one of his friends.
In 2009, Stansbury was chosen as South Australia's tidiest town. This shows how much the community cares for its area.
What Stansbury Does
In the past, Stansbury was a very busy port. It mainly sent wheat and barley to Adelaide. Today, farming grains like wheat is still a big part of the local economy.
Dalrymple Power Station
The Dalrymple electrical substation is near Stansbury. It's located at Hayward Corner. Its name comes from the area it's in, called the Hundred of Dalrymple.
This substation is important for the Yorke Peninsula. It brings in power through a large 275 kV power line. From there, it sends electricity to many towns. It also gets power from the Wattle Point Wind Farm.
A large battery, called the Dalrymple ESCRI battery, was finished in 2019. It's right next to the substation. This battery helps store energy for the area.
Local Market Fun
From mid-autumn to mid-spring, Stansbury has a special market. It happens about once a month on Saturday mornings. You can find it right on the foreshore by the sea.
This country-style market was the first of its kind. It started a trend for other markets on the Yorke Peninsula.
Things to Do in Stansbury
Stansbury has a nice beach with a pontoon. A pontoon is a floating platform. During summer school holidays, kids can learn to swim here. This is part of the VAC swim program.
The town has places to stay for visitors. There are two caravan parks. You can also find two holiday motels and a hotel in the center of town.
If you get hungry, there are three main places to eat. These include Wild Ma's Bistro, The Dalrymple Hotel, and the Blue Lime Cafe and Deli.
